The synagogue can only be tted into the scheme of things if something is known about its history and functions. This book is intended to help achieve that aim. It presents a brief, clear and straightforward picture in the hope that it will whet the reader’s appetite to go further. To that purpose, a bibliography is appended as is a list of the main sources referred to in the text. If that hope is realized, this book will have its purpose well.
