The book asks for the conditions in narrative literature around 1500 which allowed for the emergence of the figure of the 'infamous' man. By asserting his own interests at the expense of others, this figure becomes the protagonist of lower Spanish and French literature in the 16th and 17th centuries, before transforming into an 'economic man' who believes that an invisible hand translates his vices into public benefit.
