Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is by no means a large school. But that doesn't mean it isn't capable of achieving big things. Never was this more evident than during the Muskies' magnificent 1967 football season. After losing the season opener, they won eight straight games, capturing the conference championship, and went on to be voted Lakeland's Best Team from 1950-2000. Although so many years have passed since that extraordinary season, the bonds forged during that experience -- from preseason through the final game -- remain for those who were part of it. Among the cast of characters are a former NFL player, a corporate titan, retired educators and coaches, retired executives and businessmen, a scientist, social workers and one retired sports writer. That former sportswriter, author Vin Mannix, looks back through the years at this very special team. He was there for it all, joining the Muskies as a freshman walk-on and being present for each game that established their status as one of Lakeland's premier teams and, what's more, a small college power in the Midwest during the 1960s. Having spent decades in sports and community journalism, Mannix now turns those talents to this very personal experience. He examines the successful changes made by new head coach John Thome and assistant Gary Wynveen, as well as the lasting influence and support of athletic director Duane "Moose" Woltzen. Most importantly, Mannix also shares the memories of former Lakeland teammates and those close to the program. Despite the fact they're all around 70 years old, these old Muskies remember with amazing clarity and detail the plays -- and players -- that helped construct and define the championship 1967 season. Mannix's work also examines not just the nuances of the game but the sense of camaraderie that was fostered. "A Muskie Memoir" is an ode to every member of the Muskies and the incredible season that set the course for the program
