Many regions in Asia are experiencing unprecedented rapid development resulting in great pressures on environmental quality and sustainable management of natural resources. China has traditionally emphasised water shortages in the Yellow River basin and flooding by the Yangtze River, but water problems in South China, and especially the Pearl River (Zhujiang) basin are now attracting attention.
