THE CHURCH Pope Benedict XVI with that very sensus Ecclesiae that characterized his theological and pastoral Magisterium to the end of his pontificate, introduces us in this volume to the heart of the mystery of the Church. The simplicity and transparency of his immense embrace of the world at the moment of his leaving the government of the Church was, in a certain sense, the concluding act of his teaching about faith and communion. By considering the teachings of Benedict XVI as a whole we can clearly see how he has delineated a true and proper systematic theology of love. The heart of the rich teaching of Benedict XVI was the theme of faith. Since the beginning of his ministry as the Successor of Peter, he several times insisted on the need to rediscover the journey of faith and above all the joy and excitement of being a Christian. ‘The Church as a whole and all her Pastors like Christ, must set out to lead people out of the desert, towards the place of life, towards friendship with the Son of God.’ (Homily 24 April 2005)
