
Studies of prison conditions and the regimes used to administer prisons have proliferated but, until recently, the issue of accountability has not been seriously addressed. This important new work examines the concept of accountability in prisons and the way it works in practice in four leading EC member states. In doing so it helps to answer the question of how similar and different these systems are, and how the principle of accountability contributes to prison governance around the world.
