About the Author Professor Farnsworth is Alfred McCormack Professor of Law at Columbia University School of Law. His academic degrees include: B.S., Michigan, 1948; M.A., Yale, 1949; J.D., Columbia, 1952; docteur honoris causa, University of Paris (II), Catholic University of Louvain; LL.D., Dickinson College of Law. He joined the Columbia faculty in 1954 and has taught at the Universities of Paris, Istanbul, Chicago, Michigan, and Dakar, and at Harvard, Miami, and Stetson. Has been a member of the teaching staff at American law programs at Salzburg, Beijing, Paris, Rhodes, Leyden, and Amsterdam. From 1970-80, he served as U.S. Representative and in other capacities with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL); represented the United States at diplomatic conferences on international agency (Bucharest and Geneva) and international sales (Vienna); since 1979, has served as member of the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law in Rome and as member of its Working Group on UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts; and, since 1985, as a member of the U.S. Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on Private International Law.
