Jack Fly is a character I created while living in Halifax Nova Scotia. I wrote these poems as him. It was method acting if you will. I imagined I was this dirty old man in his sixties who refused to give up. He loved women, like really loved them. I blogged as him and as his best friend Jeff Hyman who was a soccer player that was 20 years younger. I saw life imitating art so I decided to finish with this game. I also started to lose the character and voice as I wrote. I will use the characters of Jack Fly and Jeff Hyman in other work but this may be the only collection of poetry. Most of it was written in 2015 in Halifax and the rest up to 2017 in St. Catharines Ontario. In the first edition Jeff Hyman wrote the introduction and I pretended Jack was real. It was fun. I added a couple other poems, fixed some typos, change a few lines and admit I wrote it for the revised edition. I have read poetry since I was six years old in grade one. I studied it in university. There aren't many people out there who care about this stuff like I do. I have written this in different styles some geared to the masses and others to academics. My main influences are Allen Ginsberg, Joyce Carol Oates, John Keats, E. E. Cummings, Charles Bukowski and of course Jack Kerouac. Jack Fly is a like a Kerouac, Bukowski hybrid who wasn't a drunk and lived a long time. As far as poets go E. E. Cummings is my favorite and had the most influence. If there are resemblances to historic works of poetry it is intentional.
