Islamic calligraphy is the creative craft of calligraphy and handwriting in languages that make use of the Arabic alphabet or alphabets that are derived from it. It features writing in Arabic, Persian, Ottoman, and Urdu. The term "khatt Arabi" which means "Arabic line, design, or construction," is used to refer to it in Arabic. Chapters and passages from the Qur'an are a common and nearly universal text upon which Islamic calligraphy is founded. The Qur'an has a powerful influence on the development of Islamic calligraphy.
