Using a variety of data sets and statistical approaches, this volume explores the links between social structure and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa. It includes a study of the mechanisms of mortality through an examination of the aetiology of the principal diseases which affect the children of Africa. The work provides a general survey of the current mortality levels, detailed discussions of the major causes of death, as well as sections on famine and AIDS. It will be of interest to social scientists and the lay public as well as planners and demographers.
