With sentiments of gratitude for the kindness which I received from the Nuns and their worthy Chaplain, and recommending myself to their prayers, I left Medina and hastened on to Salamanca, where I arrived the following day. Great was my joy in finding myself within the walls of this ancient and venerable, and oncerenowned seat of learning. I proceeded immediately under the direction of a guide, to the Irish College, better known in Salamanca under the title of "Colegio Mayor del Arzobispo," so called from Fonseca, Archbishop of Seville, who founded the College in the fourteenth century. I need hardly mention that I was received by the respected vice-rector--the Rev. J. Mooney--with genuine Irish hospitality. I soon found myself at home, and had the pleasure of being introduced to the students, then only eight in number, who were studying their Divinity. They all seemed animated with the true Ecclesiastical spirit, and made many kind inquiries about the Scotch and English students at Valladolid. The College is exceedingly fine, and so also is the Church, though it was sadly injured by the French during the invasion. This is not, however, the College where, during the last century, Dr. Curtis, Dr. Troy, Dr. Laffen, and Archbishop Murray were educated. The building is now in ruins. It was only in 1821 that the present College was given by the Spanish Government for the education of Irish students. The first endowment in Spain, for the Irish Missions, was made by Thomas White, Esq., of Clonmel, at Valladolid; but it was translated to Salamanca by Philip II., in 1592. The two Friars were Fray Antonio and St. John of the Cross. The former was tall of stature and the latter small....
