Chemistry is the study of transformations of matter---chemical reactions. This photograph shows the reaction of sodium metal with water to produce hydrogen gas. In combining with oxygen in air to form water, the hydrogen ignites in a spectacular display. Throughout, this text examines a wide range of reactions--both as they occur in the laboratory and in the world outside the laboratory--and the chemical principles that underline them.
