Description And Symptoms.--A protrusion of the lining of the bowel during stool, which returns afterwards. In cases of long standing the descent may occur from walking or standing, especially when the structures are much relaxed. Causes.--Straining during the act of stool, or from the presence of worms in the rectum; diarrhoea, constipation. Treatment.--The prolapsed part should be put back by gentle pressure with the oiled finger, and the recumbent posture observed for some time afterwards. Injections of cold water give tone to the relaxed structures. Diet should be nutritious and digestible. If the patient suffer from indigestion, worms, or constipation, the treatment of these ailments should be adopted. Medicines.--In adults, Nux Vomica-J-, especially if there be constipation and straining. In children, Ignatia%, if constipation; andPodophyllum 3x, if prolapse occurs with diarrhoea. Ulcerated, or Fissured Anus. Description And Symptoms.--A narrow ulcerated slit in the lower portion of the lining of the bowel. Intense sharp pains, occurring during stool and for some time afterwards, characterize this condition. These pains are more intense than those which arise from Piles, but last a shorter time. Causes.--A heated state of the bowel, constipation, foreign bodies, straining. Treatment.--Injections of tepid water, attention to the bowels, careful diet, rest. Medicines And Local Applications.--Esculus Hip., and an ointment of the same, should be used, the latter being passed into the bowel by means of the finger.
