In 1866, Kansas native Lucas Beckett escapes to Nevada to break away from the distress that has consumed him. His new roommate exemplifies compassion for him at a camp housing men building the First Transcontinental Railroad. It is primarily being constructed by the Irish and Chinese, who encounter extensive prejudice. Likewise, general store owner Roland Green convinces his wife to relocate from Nebraska to Nevada. He aspires to invest in the railroads, make a name for himself and increase his wealth. However, his sensible wife sees that his dreams overshadow more important things in life. Both Lucas and Roland must confront their own inner strife. As they find themselves, the railroad will play a large part in indelibly linking their lives and many others together.
