The Red Notebook is a collection of family records. It is hand-written by my paternal great-grandfather, Moses Joy Townsend, Jr.. His initials appear at various places throughout the text, and I have maintained those in the transcription. His daughter, my paternal grandmother, Zoa Townsend Fletcher, added small notes and corrections to various pages of the text over the years. I have included these without identifying notation so that the reading of the notebook will be easier. I have maintained the original spelling, punctuation, etc..The records in this book appear in the same order as in the original notebook, and bear the original headings. I have added a table of contents and a selected index to the original contents. This is a valuable reference for genealogists covering the area around Lancaster, Massachusetts, during the earliest era of American colonization.
