Michael Mann's solo voyage was part impulsiveness, but also meticulously planned with preparationand cunning determination. During a grueling 38 day ocean crossing, his basic sailing skills would be challenged by tranquil doldrums, as well as hostile seas churned up by an approaching hurricane. His 15-foot Montgomery sloop Little Breeze lacked the navigation and communication equipment available today. Without GPS and weather updates, he was forced to rely on his own instincts, limited experience and sheer resolve.
