Did you really think that I wouldn’t tell you about my wedding? It was glorious! 1895 was a year for marriages. But because we are not Catholic we held it at l’Oratoire just outside of the Louvre, a shell of a church given to the Protestants by Napoleon. It’s a bit small and there wasn’t room for everyone, but it was the best we could find in Paris. I would no longer be Calista Carmichael, sailor and merchant, but Lady Calista Antoine, Duchess of Tervuren. But really, I should start at the beginning and that would be at my future sister Clémentine’s wedding, in Italy. This story is, after all, about weddings and honeymoons so we might as well include them all, and Clémentine’s wedding was the event that put me squarely back in the gun sights of the British.
