This publication presents a comprehensive view of available knowledge about alcohol & other drug use, and related health & social problems, in Canada up to spring 1994. It also examines work of potentially national significance in all provinces & territories with people at particular risk of harm (women, Aboriginal peoples, youth, seniors, impaired drivers). Following a summary report at the beginning, separate subsections present data on alcohol, tobacco, licit drug (including prescribed & over-the-counter medications), and illicit drug use. Each subsection includes information on associated problems and comments on related economic issues & social attitudes. The data sources include the 1993 General Social Survey, the 1990 Health Promotion Survey, alcohol & tobacco sales statistics, provincial & territorial research reports, and contracted research. The final section discusses information gaps & challenges for future research.
