Under the Coast Defence Volunteers Law of 1893, the Governor Constitution. is empowered in the event of anticipated war to raise a special force of Coast Defence Volunteers to assist in the service of the submarine mine defences, or any measures involving the employment of steamers, launches, &c. Although this law has not been repealed, instructions have been issued that it is to be held in abeyance. Organisation. The proportion of the several ranks is laid down bv the Governor. Orgatmar r 'Hon. Discipline. The provisions of the Army Act apply to the Coast Defence Discipline. Volunteers from the date of their enrolment; and the provisions of the Militia Law 1879 and the several amendments of that law apply to the Coast Defence Volunteers as if they were enrolled under it. They are deemed to be on active service from the date of their enrolment. Terms Ok Enlistment. Coast Defence Volunteers are engaged for a period of six months, Terms of if war is not declared within that period, and if war is declared within Enlistment. that period, further for the period of the war. The Jamaica Rifle Association was formed in 1896 to promote rifle shooting in the island. The Government has no claim on the services of members in time of emergency.
