By the time Debo reached the age of nine years, circumstances around MayHall caused him to have to grow up fast. MayHall had been besieged with a mysterious epidemic. People had been dying off over the county from what turned out to be rattlesnake bites. In about two months time, twenty-four people had died. Both Debo and his Daddy, Mr. T, became aware that there was a way to end the problem with the rattlesnakes and the rats that had been taking over the place. Before they could solve the problem, Debo's daddy was killed by a rattlesnake. Young Debo now had double the pressure on him. He had to do all the farm work, battle rattlesnakes and rats everyday, and he was more determined than ever to solve the mystery.
