Details of the Burma Campaign and its struggles and ultimate success in 1945 are well known. Much has been written about the appalling fighting conditions and the horrors of what many POW’s experienced under the Japanese. Less known are the stories of civilians of many races who were forced to retreat to India in 1942 along with British, Indian and Chinese soldiers. Most had to walk through dense jungle and climb high mountains during the monsoon, often sick, exhausted, and starving. The statistics of deaths on the route can only be estimates. This book contains extracts from three unforgettable detailed true stories written by a British doctor, a Captain in the Burma Frontier Force and a British soldier. It is outstanding that they were able to record so much from day to day and their accounts draw us in and keep us absorbed till the end.
