Headstrong Caroline, a secret supporter of the Royalist cause, dreamed of helping the King. Brought up by a Puritan uncle, life in his household became intolerable. Ill-treated, dispossessed andthreatened with marriage, she looked for a means of escape, becoming involved in the intrigues of the Royalists during the last months of Cromwell's protectorate. But she is also haunted by the shadow of a sinister Roundhead Colonel, who desires her, but also threatens her safety.
