
The decisive period following the acquisition by Canada of the area that is now Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. During this time Sitting Bull and the Sioux sought refuge in the Cypress Hills, the buffalo disappeared, important treaties were signed with the plains indians and the Canadian Pacific Railway was built across the prairies. This major change took place without widespread bloodshed largely due to the work of the Mounted Police. As the decade ended, government neglect and regressive policies set the stage for the North West Rebellion.
