Mia Tang must navigate the complexities of her life as a ten-year-old immigrant managing a motel front desk while harboring secrets that could endanger her family. Mia's parents work as cleaners at the Calivista Motel, but Mia is the one running the front desk. Her biggest challenge is keeping her parents' secret: they are hiding undocumented immigrants in empty rooms, a fact that would lead to their ruin if the cruel motel owner, Mr. Yao, discovers it. Adding to her burden, Mia dreams of becoming a writer, a pursuit her mother dismisses in favor of math, believing English is too difficult for her. Mia's year will be defined by her efforts to maintain her job, assist the motel's guests and hidden residents, evade Mr. Yao, and pursue her own aspirations.
