To celebrate 25 years of Index on Censorship, this collection has been brought together in one volume to portray the happenings that have taken place in the former Communist areas of Europe. There are essays by figures as varied as Andrei Sakharov, Roy Medvedev, Mark Frankland, Vaclav Havel, Salman Rushdie, W.L. Webb and Geoffrey Hosking. The book provides a witness to the collapse of totalitarian regimes and their transformation into fledgling democracies or into neo-facist states.
