L He situation of Fernaw, in the mean time, became ever more painful, and the continual waiting in vain for letters from Charlotte, drove his ill-humour to the highest pitch. One morning he ordered himself to he announced to the minister, and as the latter, on the pretext of business, refused bis visit, he began with such violent and pressing entreaties, that at last the doors were opened to him. The old Count received him as usual, coldly, seriously, and solemnly, but the unhappy man was not as usual, terrified back with it. The following conversation arose: The Count. What is it you are pleased to want, Mr. counsellor of legation? Fernaw. Your excellency beholds before you, a man, who is in despair. It is now almost six weeks since I have heard a syllable from my beloved wife. The Count. (with a scarce perceptible smile.) From your beloved wife? Fern Aw. To none of my letters do I receive an answer. Something must have happened, some misfortune must have befallen her. The Count. So soon? Fern Aw. (with surprise) So Soon? May I ask an explanation of that expression, from your excellency? The Count. My meaning is, it is scarce three months that we have been here, and at our departure, the good fortune of your lady wife, was but in its first bloom. Fernaw. I do not understand your excellency, perhaps my distraction is the cause. I can no longer bear this situation.
