This book is a mix of genealogy and history of the life and descendants of Redmond McMahan, c1731-c1836, a Revolutionary War veteran with Scots-Irish heritage coming to America before 1746, who lived in South West Virginia after America won it's independence, migrating to Buncombe County North Carolina and then into Tennessee. Some of his sons remained in Buncombe NC, some migrated to and remained in Cocke County and neighboring Sevier County, and the younger sons went into central Tennessee. This is their history and story that focuses on father Redmond, and son Eli, but discusses all of their children in a historical context that is derived from primary historical records and not family myths. Redmond appears to be a conflicted individual with wavering loyalties in the war that is explained in the historical context that was forming the choices and actions that he made.
