The Ella E. Flemings School is an historic little red schoolhouse in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. The original one-room school was built ca. 1859 and has served the people of Tewksbury for over 150 years. The school pioneered the use of student teachers in the classroom who used the Ella E. Flemings School as a model training school. In fact, the Ella E. Flemings School was among the first, if not the first school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to do so. The story of the Ella E. Flemings School is more than the story of a schoolhouse. It is the story of a community faced with the task of educating the children of an ever-changing society. This book is designed as a compendium of the history of the school where the facts combine to tell the story of this historic site. Included are biographies of teachers and faculty members as well as a chapter dedicated to the architecture of the school. A final chapter is a fully-illustrated tour of the schoolhouse. Through interviews, letters, and memorabilia, the memories of many former teachers and students of this special school are captured on the pages of this book.
