UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD OF MONEY & BANKING THROUGH A HISTORICAL LENS Money is critical to the rise and fall of societies, yet it appears few appreciate its power. This book challenges readers to think about the nature of money, where it comes from, and who should control it. To understand the present and to anticipate the future, one must first know the past. To that end, readers will use the lessons of history to develop the intuition and context necessary to answer these important questions. A History of Money & Banking is an intermediate textbook that explores the early foundations of money, interest, trade, and related institutions. While some technical analysis is provided, the emphasis is on history, from the events and institutions of ancient cultures, to the Roman Empire, to early American history. Through this historical lens, readers will develop a unique perspective in assessing the role of money, banks, and central banking in modern society. The virtue and vice of money: how the moral hazards of inflation, corruption, and fraud inform lives, governments, and monetary systems.
