Two high school geniuses scheme to get the other to confess their love first. The narrative centers on the elaborate psychological battles between Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane, both brilliant student council members determined not to be the first to confess their romantic feelings. Their schemes are complicated by Kaguya's powerful family, whose political and financial ambitions threaten to force her into an arranged marriage, and the escalating succession war between her brothers. The story unfolds through their intricate plans, misunderstandings, and the occasional genuine moment of connection, all within the structured environment of their elite high school.

The premise of two intellectual rivals engaged in a battle of wits to avoid confessing love is a consistent draw for readers. The series is known for its sharp humor, clever plotting, and the escalating stakes that come with Kaguya's family drama and the succession conflict. Readers often praise the intricate schemes and the satisfying, albeit slow-burning, romantic tension between the main characters. The introduction of new plotlines, such as Ai's bodyguard duties and the dynamics between Yu and Miko, are generally well-received as they add variety to the established formula. The narrative's ability to balance comedic absurdity with genuine emotional development is a key factor in its sustained popularity.
