Author Description

The original author of this book, William J. Canby, travelled to Cuba in 1855 at the age of thirty, attempting to improve his health. What he encountered was a different world, ruled by the Spanish Government and deeply reliant on the institution of slavery. He experienced a remnant of the Old-World colonies and a different view of life. His experiences speak to us today to remind us of the scars of the past and provide an opportunity to learn about a close neighbor and some of its history.
