Excerpt from Early Letters of Marcus Dods, Late Principal of New College, Edinburgh, 1850-1864 Even at that time he was the last man to parade or reveal his troubles. Among his fellows he was known as a tall dark and scholarly student, refined reserved and even shy in manner, courteous kindly and witty in conversation, but also calm cheerful and apparently unburdened certainly the farthest of us all from egotism of any kind or degree. None of us knew what he felt within the smooth shelving sides of that pit into which young men on their way to high usefulness (in Egypt or elsewhere) are sometimes cast.' Of the present disclosure of what his own reticence so carefully guarded, little need be said. Such revelations by survivors are sometimes justified by the circumstances of the case. The present publication was undertaken, not without deliberation, in the hope that it might perhaps serve a larger purpose than the mere gratification of a friendly interest or curiosity. The editor welcomes this opportunity of record ing his sincere gratitude to a number of his father's friends, to whom he has never applied in vain for counsel, and in particular to the Rev. Sir William Robertson Nicoll, who has given invaluable advice and help; to the Rev. Dr. W. M. Macgregor, to whose fine judgment he is also very greatly indebted; and to Mr. Andrew Marshall, who has ungrudgingly spent time and labour upon the preparation of the collection.
