Ukraine, 1941. Bella Kaplan had a hard childhood, failing to live up to her mother's expectations. But when the Nazis invaded, everything got much worse. She and her family fled, only to return years later to a ruined home. Eventually, tired of her mother's criticism, Bella escapes to university and falls in love. Just when she thinks she finally has the home she has wanted, her life begins to unravel as she is caught between the demands of her alcoholic husband and her resentful son. Can she find a way to live the life she's dreamed of, or will she always be haunted by her mother's lack of love?
