His lyrics show great beauty of finished form, but lack the essen tial qualities that result from the ability of yielding completely to the mood of the hour. Much the same can be said of his dramas; they are almost perfect in form and construction, but the characters are not con vincing realities. Greater success attended his efi'orts in the novel, of which Kinder der Welt (1873) and Im Paradiese (1876) are the best. In these he has pre sented real, living personalities, which impress on the reader their naturalness and truth to life.
