This volume serves as a comprehensive directory of books in print for the years 1986-1987. Compiled by the R.R. Bowker Company, it aims to catalog available literary and informational works published or distributed within the United States. The primary argument is the necessity of a centralized, up-to-date reference for publishers, booksellers, librarians, and readers to navigate the vast landscape of published materials.

As a standard reference work, 'Books in Print' is generally regarded as an indispensable tool for the book trade and library science. Its consistent publication over many years attests to its utility and reliability in cataloging the literary output of the period. The authority perspective is that of a comprehensive, factual resource essential for bibliographic control and access.
