Author Description

Game Planning With The 2023 San Francisco 49ers will take the reader game by game and focus on the major/unique concepts and play calls for each game. The 49ers run game always starts with Outside Zone. They call all the different variations and tags. Strong and weak, single back and lead, split flow and full flow. They pair down their vast menu each week to attack the specifics of each defense, but over the course of 2023 they ran it all. Each version was called with creating leverage for the offensive line in mind. The 49ers also excel at finding gap and auxiliary runs for each defense. They game-planned Duo and Counter well in 2023, as one that stuck out to me. The 49ers have always devastated defenses off play action under Kyle Shanahan, and 2023 was no different. This book diagrams some of the classics, and also looks into the new concepts and variations they designed for their 2023 schedule. In the drop back pass game, the 49ers always like to tinker with their base route windows to create new concepts and variations each season. With Choice and Bang-Pivot being two of the bedrock concepts in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, the coaching staff found different ways to change these up to create cleaner reads for the quarterback while adapting to how defenses are trying to take them away. The 49ers got better at attacking outside the numbers in the drop back game in 2023. With different scheme adjustments, and Purdy’s willingness to work that area of the field, the 49ers were able to break tendencies and change how defenses prepared for them.
