The Autumn of 1933. Murders are happening at an alarming rate in and around Hattiesburg. Hattie Bonet’s aunt, Ida Rabinowitz, has unexpectedly arrived to take Hattie back to New York. Since the passing of her sister, Ida is worried that Hattie’s father, Jacob Bonet, is incapable of raising an eleven-year-old daughter alone. When Hattie refuses to leave, relishing her role as the infamous Jewish tomboy of the South, it forces Ida to wait patiently until her niece comes to her senses. But while she waits, she reluctantly becomes ingratiated into Hattiesburg society. As cantankerous as she is, she gradually begins to feel at home. “Oh no. No, no, no, no.” Hattie confided to a friend. “It’s hard enough to raise my daddy. Now, I’m forced to raise my aunt, too.”
