A boy with a dangerous gift navigates a world that fears him. Before he became the feared Darkling, he was a lonely child in Ravka, a land where Grisha were hunted. This story explores his early life, his struggle to control his extraordinary powers, and the choices that set him on the path to becoming a ruler.

As a prequel to the highly successful Grisha Trilogy, 'The Demon in the Wood' offers readers a glimpse into the formative years of a central antagonist. The narrative is expected to delve into the origins of the Darkling's power and his motivations, appealing to fans of the series seeking deeper character understanding. The story's focus on a character often perceived as purely villainous suggests an exploration of themes related to nature versus nurture and the corrupting influence of power. Its release as a standalone novella likely provides a focused, character-driven experience within the broader Shadow and Bone universe.
