Inspired by Edward Steichen's The Family Of Man, M.I.L.K., an acronym for Moments of Intimacy, Laughter, and Kinship, was founded on what is arguably the largest photographic competition ever conducted. With a record prize of 750,000., the contest attracted 17,000 photographers from 164 countries. From the 40,000 photographs submitted, 300 were selected that best captured and celebrated the essence of humanity and conveyed real and spontaneous emotion. Beginning in April 2001, the winning images will appear in three high-quality books with the themes of friendship, family, and love. The photographs will be showcased in a major exhibition at Grand Central Terminal in New York in July 2001, and will travel to fifteen international cities in the following three years. These three lavishly produced wall calendars will share the same themes as the books as well as their exceptional production values.
