The Commissioner has the mandate to ensure that the equality of status of English and French is recognized to ensure compliance of the Official Languages Act, and to inform Canadians of their rights. The Commissioner informs and advises institutions and citizens alike with a view to revitalizing Canada's linguistic duality, monitors the advancement of English and French in society, and the vitality of the official language minority communities. This report provides a summary of the activities conducted and the results obtained by the Commissioner in the following areas: government transformations, community development (health, education), bilingualism and quality of government services, and the new information and communication technologies. The last chapter deals with the concern of Canadians (profile of complaints, media, language of work, equitable participation, language requirements). The appendices discuss interventions (political, community, administrative, awareness, legal) and complaints handling.
