What happens after a war is over? Can life go back to normal? Is there such a thing as normal in the post-war world? The citizens of Sarajevo who survived a brutal civil war along with a siege of their city had to find a way to cope once the conflict ended--at least on paper--with the signing of the Dayton Accord. They had to make sense of what was left of their world, mend what was broken inside them following years of pain and suffering and endless hardships. In 1997, a short time after the war had ended I visited Sarajevo--a city still shattered and broken...I want to take you on a journey--a day--full of memorable encounters with amazing people; vignettes with a spirit of hope; stark images of the city; the way it felt to be there during the period of post-war trauma--the shadow of death looming across the pale blue sky like a dark grey halo--and catch a glimpse of the beauty as the city rises up from the ashes of war.
