It is said that his ancestors belonged to a Scottish clan whose motto was: Stand fast, stand firm, stand sure. His great-grandfather, honest Matthew Grant, landed on Nantasket Beach, in Massachusetts, in 1630, just ten years after the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. His grandfather was a soldier in the French and Indian war, and his father was a lieutenant in the Revolution. Jesse Grant was proud of his ancestors. He tried to honor their memory by his own upright life and often said that Stand fast, stand firm, stand sure was just as good a motto for an Ameri can as for a Scotchman.
