"The Centre Pompidou is proposing the first major exhibition dedicated to Bagyi Aung Soe (1923-1990), a pioneering and prolific figure in modern Burmese art. With a selection of over three hundred works and documents, the exhibition retraces the development of his work over four decades, from the 1940s to the 1990s. Oils on canvas, works using felt-tip pen on paper, reverse glass painting and illustrations are accompanied by archives and original manuscripts. In an exploration of the blend of his artistic and spiritual heritages - modern Western art, Rabindranath Tagore's thinking, the precepts and practices of Buddhism, Burmese classical and popular art and other Asian arts - in a turbulent historical context, the exhibition aims to highlight Aung Soe's specific and plural artistic modernity."--Host institution's website.
