Unhoused is the first collection of poetry by West Australian poet Chris Palazzolo. Strange, beautiful and inventive, these 56 poems have been a work in progress for more than two decades and tear apart the concept of artistic alienation, in which the familiar streets and houses become extraordinary through the poet's eyes. Unhoused is a play on the German word 'Unheimlich', translated literally as 'un-homed', 'un-familiar' or 'uncanny'. These poems guide us from a pub to a school, from a playroom to a row of houses, from a busy freeway to a beautiful and imaginary Utopia. These poems will change the way we see the ordinary world around us.
The collection explores the uncanny nature of the familiar world through the poet's unique perspective. Palazzolo's poems, developed over two decades, dismantle the notion of artistic alienation by transforming ordinary streets, houses, and public spaces into extraordinary landscapes. Drawing on the German concept of 'Unheimlich'—meaning un-homed, unfamiliar, or uncanny—the work guides readers through diverse settings, from pubs and schools to freeways and imagined Utopias. These poems aim to fundamentally alter the reader's perception of the everyday.
The collection is noted for its inventive and beautiful approach to poetry, offering a fresh perspective on the ordinary. The poems are described as tearing apart the concept of artistic alienation, finding the extraordinary in familiar streets and houses. This work is seen as a significant exploration of the 'uncanny' or 'un-homed' experience, guiding readers through a variety of settings. Ultimately, the poems are intended to shift the reader's perception of the world around them.
