
Like all of Jane Austen's novels, Emma is a unique of courtship and social manners. The majority of the book makes a speciality of the question of marriage: who will marry whom and for what reasons will they marry: love, practicality, or necessity? At the center of the narration is the name individual, Emma Woodhouse, a heiress who lives with her widowed father at their property, Hartfield. Noted for her beauty and cleverness, Emma is relatively wasted inside the small village of Highbury but takes a brilliant deal of pride in her matchmaking capabilities. Unique among different girls her age, she has no specific want to marry: she is within the particular situation of no longer desiring a husband to deliver her fortune.At the start of the novel, Emma's governess, Miss Taylor, has just married Mr. Weston, a rich ma who owns Randalls, a nearby estate. Without Miss Taylor as a companion, Emma feels lonely and decides to undertake the orphan Harriet Smith as a protègè. Harriet lives at a close-by boarding college and is aware of nothing of her parents. Emma concludes that Harriet's father have to had been a gentleman and advises the harmless Harriet in virtually all matters, which include her desire of society. She shows that Harriet does not spend any extra time with the Martins, a local family of farmers whose son, Robert, has paid Harriet a great deal interest. Instead, Emma plans to play matchmaker for Harriet and Mr. Elton, the vicar of the church in Highbury.
