Trowbridge 1984 Project You have in your hands the first edition of the book of the 'Trowbridge 1984 Project'. The aim was to take photographs in and around Trowbridge every day of the year to show how a town in England did not turn out as forecast by George Orwell in his book '1984'. There is no Winston Smith or Big Brother, nor is there Airstrip one. I went out and took a few photographs of people, places and events each day and ended up with over 1,200 of them. From those I have published 12 books, one for each month of 1984, which contain all the photographs for that month. This 1984 Album contains 366 selected photographs. The negatives are held at the Wiltshire County Archives in Chippenham and you can order a copy of any of these photograph from them. There is also a web site in progress which contains many of the photographs www.Tr1984.co.uk.
This book documents daily life in Trowbridge throughout 1984, contrasting the reality with George Orwell's dystopian vision. The Trowbridge 1984 Project aimed to capture the essence of a typical English town, demonstrating the absence of oppressive surveillance or totalitarian control depicted in Orwell's novel. Photographer Michael Lloyd documented people, places, and events daily, amassing over 1,200 photographs. This album presents a curated selection of 366 images, offering a visual chronicle of the year.
The Trowbridge 1984 Project offers a unique photographic record intended to contrast the mundane reality of town life with Orwell's fictional dystopia. The project's aim was to document Trowbridge daily, providing a visual counter-narrative to '1984'. The collection of 366 selected photographs serves as a testament to the absence of overt totalitarianism in the depicted setting. The archival nature of the negatives and the existence of a related website suggest a community-focused initiative with lasting historical value.
