This work investigates the complex historical development of Asian civilizations from their earliest origins through the mid-20th century. Woodbridge Bingham, a noted historian of East Asia, utilizes a comprehensive chronological framework to synthesize the political, social, and cultural evolution of diverse Asian regions. The text serves as a foundational academic survey, balancing broad regional trends with specific developments in China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia.

The subject matter points to a dense, academic survey intended for students and researchers seeking a foundational understanding of Asian history. The framing suggests a traditional, broad-scope approach that prioritizes chronological clarity and factual breadth over specialized thematic analysis.
