
The century begins with a massive expansion of the Hartford Carpet Corporation, inviting émigrés from Italy and Poland. Three influential figures emerge in the village: Antonio John Gannuscio, an Italian banker; Edward Bromage, the first police chief; and Father Stanislaus Federkiewicz, a Polish Reverend. Mother Nature tests the village with water in 1936, 1938, and 1955, Saint Patrick's is consumed by fire in 1949, bandits rob Brink's at Bigelow, the Belmont Avenue boxing arena closes, as does Westfield Plate, all while Donald Crichton performs on Broadway, Hollywood, and television. Hallmark establishes itself on Central Street, the Crestliner Boat division opens and closes, Thomas P.
