Excerpt from Proceedings of the 1974 Technical Session on Cane Sugar Refining Research: Cherry Hill, N. J., October 20-22, 1974 In the last quarter of 1955, a report (19) was issued giving preliminary data for the amount of sucrose retained by bone char that has been used for sugar adsorption. The method used for sucrose determination in this report was considered somewhat crude, and shortly a much more refined method, based on pyrolysis, was developed. The new procedure showed that as much as of sucrose per weight of char may be retained by good quality char. This informa tion has helped fill in the gap of unknown sugar loss. The Proceedings of the 1974 Technical Session on Cane Sugar Refining Research addresses the critical issue of sucrose retention in bone char. The U.S. Agricultural Research Service presents findings from a 1955 report that initially estimated sucrose retention, later refined by a more advanced pyrolysis-based method. This research aimed to quantify and understand the unknown sugar loss associated with bone char usage in sugar adsorption, providing crucial data for the industry.
This collection of technical papers from 1974 likely serves as a valuable historical reference for those in the sugar refining industry. The inclusion of research on sucrose retention and analytical methods points to a focus on process efficiency and material loss reduction. The reprint format suggests an effort to make this specialized knowledge accessible to contemporary researchers and practitioners.
