Donald Kuspit explores why artist Thomas Chimes goes back to the past– portraying avant-garde artists from the turn of the last century– to find an identity in the postmodern present. This publication overviews Chimes's celebrated series of panel portraits, each in their own artist-made wood frame and explores the philosophers, artists, and thinkers depicted in the series that were so formative to the artist's own way of thinking.
